On February 16, 2010, Jim Flaherty Minister of Finance announced a number of measures to support the long-term stability of Canada's housing market by making changes to the mortgage qualification requirements for homebuyers. The announcement indicates that all borrowers will need to meet the standards for a five-year fixed rate mortgage (instead of only a three-year fixed rate) regardless of what they choose for their mortgage. Also, the announcement requires that Canadian home buyers put down a 10% deposit on their home purchase instead of the previously mandated 5%. In addition, speculation has been discouraged by requiring owners of certain non-owner occupied properties to put down a 20% deposit in order to attain a mortgage. See the official announcement here.
